    Greetings and Salutations from NC

Hello all and thank you for the welcome.

I must admit right off that this is the first time I have ever joined a forum with the purpose to participate. At age 54, this may seem strange and perhaps doubly so since my occupation has been software development, and in particular web related software, for the past fifteen plus years. In some ways, technology scares me.

In any event, being a long time backpacking adventurer who's getting too old and tired of sleeping on the ground, my current aim is two fold: firstly, to thru-hike the AT in 2014 and, secondly, to do so using a hammock.

At present, I have no hammock gear (no tarp, no quilts, no suspension, etc.). I have spent the last month or so lurking, learning, and listening to all the information I can gather and, of course, landed many times upon this magnificent site as the result of internet searches, and so decided to join, surround myself with its wisdom, and, maybe, even make a friend or two.

One last tidbit, I recently buried a Peach Crowned Conure whom I had the privilege to care for after 35 years; hence my forum name is in memoriam to his passing.

Welcome Conure from Carolina Beach. You'll have lots of good advice here as you "gear up" for hammocking. Drop me a PM if I can be of assistance.

Welcome to the site and I am very sorry for your loss. I believe I travel through your neck of the woods to my favorite beach, Oak Island NC. Hope to see you around the site friend.

Welcome to the forums Conure, and fwiw, I like birds too, sorry for your loss of a good friend.
Hammocks are fascinating, and there is much one can learn, but not so much that one must learn. If at all possible try to attend a hang somewhere, there are several in N.C. from time to time, and you will definitely make some friends, and most likely learn some things to help you make choices of gear. Your state is a veritable treasure trove of quality hammock gear from great cottage industry folks. Ask lots of questions, this forum has great patience with new folks.

Thank you, everyone, for the kind words and support. The loss of any pet is great but after 35 years it feels very strange not having him around. His name was Purusha.
