Got the green light last week to get away for the weekend. I had planned to get another quick solo trip into the Sawtooths but the weather came in early this year and it looked like 4-6" of wet snow. So a few emails around and I I decided to head south and meet up with some friends in Elko NV.
One buddy that I know through some Tenkara trips was free for most of Friday Afternoon so we made plans to meet up and hit a little stream. They had gotten a little weather over night and it was lingering a little but we geared up and hit the stream for a few hours. We worked our way up stream for a just shy of a mile each of us picking off small rainbows and brookies as we went.
The water was low and very clear so we worked our way slowly upstream trying to be as delicate as possible with our casts and movement. We still ended up scaring a number of fish as we went but hooked up with dozens each. There was a bit of snow and we had a few moments here and there with flurries coming down on us but we still had a great time.
We headed back to town around 4 so my buddy could get to a going away party for a friend of his. I got in touch with KSC from here on the forum and we made plans to meet up at one of the local steak houses for dinner and then head back out to the canyon for a night in our hammocks. With full bellies we set up in a small grove of trees and after a camp fire and a few brews we were in the hammocks early for a cool night.
The sun came up and with clear skies in the morning we got set to have breakfast and plan the day out.
KSC's Dangerbird with his 0˚ Hammock Gear quilt set...he was warm
There was still a little snow lingering on the higher peaks.
We decided to take it easy for the day, I was going to fish and KSC set out to relax and read. He was great and shuttled me up and down to check out a few different areas of the stream.
KSC decided to run home and pick up a few things while I worked over the section of stream that my friend and I had hit the day before...It was right next to where KSC and I camped and made for easy access.
I worked a little slower upstream hitting every pocket. I picked up a number of fish again a mix of rainbows and brookies...eventually getting a couple of Tiger Trout as well.
Tigers are a lab made mix of Brown and Brook trout, they are strong for their size and pretty aggressive feeders so they hit most anything that hits the water...they end up growing pretty fast but are sterile so several western states (nevada being one) plant them in areas they don't want to have them take over...the way brookies tend to.
A little over a mile and a few more fish and I hiked back out to meet KSC back at camp just as he was finishing cutting down a few dead trees. We headed down to a little place for a burger and brew then set about cutting up a stack of wood for the fire.
The sun was going down and it cooled off a little but not near as much as the night before.
Late at night the wind picked up and sent my hammock rocking back and forth all night. In the morning the clouds had rolled in, the wind was to strong to be able to fish so we packed up and headed into town for breakfast. Afterward I headed for home. Had a great trip down to hang out with some friends, catch some fish and get a little R&R in the hammock. Nevada has always been a great place to hang my hammock and catch some great little fish.
