Weekend Warrior from PA Saying Hello

I'm just a warm weather hammock camper from PA. I like bicycle camping on the GAP/C&O trails and camping in Allegheny Nat'l Forest. My setup is an ENO doublenest with some webbing for suspension and a Hennessy hex rainfly. I'm also looking to do some cold weather hangs this winter, though I'm a newbie at cold weather camping. Just wanted to drop in and say hi!

Welcome Surly! Glad you are here, there is a ton of information here along with some great people.

I am currently planning a trip on the C&O/GAP trails, as a matter of fact I have spent the morning preparing another itinerary. The only thing for certain right now is it will be early may 2014. I was approved leave at work and I am off the first three weeks of May. The issue is at home, the wife is all for me going but she asked for two things, one is I can't go alone and the second one is about 5 or 6 days is all she wants me gone. Since I have never done it I don't know what to expect. I rode a little over 50 miles yesterday in about 4.5 hours but I probably would not have wanted to ride anymore for the day.

So the question is do I cram high mileage in to the trip every day and do the whole thing from D.C. To Pittsburg or do I just do the C&O this time and takemy time enjoying it? I have about 7 months I guess to figure it out.

Anyway, glad you are here, welcome.

Thanks for the warm welcome, glad to hear from another GAP/C&O camper! You can do the whole trail in 6 days if you can already do 50 miles in 4.5 hours. The worst for me is sitting on a bike seat all day, so I would recommend investing in a nice seat. You'd be surprised how much further you can ride when you're that much more comfortable. 55-60 miles over 6 days is a fine pace for the trail. Spread those 55-60 miles out over 8-10 hours a day, and you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the ride. My trip last April got rained out on day 2, so make sure to be prepared for that. Also, the trail if really safe, and I've done several solo rides with no issues. It's not uncommon to have to have to share a campsite, which can be good or bad depending on the people joining you. Most people are friendly and helpful.

Welcome from another C/O bicycle camper from York Pa.Beats walking How about a winter ride before Thanksgiving. Last trip was a solo, what a drag. I've been trying to put a group ride together all summer.
