my hammock is about my belly button height, so that when i get in it is about chair seat height.

I start out with mine a bit higher than I actually want, because after the hammock nylon stretches a bit, it will sag down to just about right.
Like most of the other "hammock rules", I do things differently. I should change my name to "The Contrarian" Hammocker".
I try for chair height but that is by no means a rule that I adhere to. I did notice the ENO website says they wont accept user photos that show hammocks higher than 18". They are squelching my creativity.
I like my hammock higher, between 24 & 30"...
The first rule about hammocking is...

Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
At the house 18-24" but camping I like to be higher, like 36-40".
Carpe noctem!!
Butt high, then a bit higher for hammock stretch.
While most seem to have not heard of the 18", I have, but wouldn't say it was a rule, just a starting point. I think the Hammock hang calculator that Derek came up with, started your sit height at 18", but you could change it.
Personally, I like mine a little higher, as others have said, enough that I can comfortable put my shoes on.......RR
