    NJ> Mahlon Dickerson?

Saw that location mentioned in another thread. Next weekend, I'm looking to camp/hike w/ 2 ground dwellers. Usually we'd just head up to Trout Pond near Roscoe, NY, but I'm looking for something different.

Does anyone know if you can camp at Mahlon Dickerson outside the "designated" areas? Up at Trout we normally just hike around and find a clearing. My brother doesn't like being so close to the other campers, and would prefer to be away in our own little area, even if it's primitive. I'd like to keep the hike to a beginner level, since that's about where I am.

Any and all info is appreciated (even if it's suggestions for other places!). I'm REALLY new to all this, so don't have much of an idea as to where to go. We're in NY, but don't mind the drive. Thanks, and happy hanging!

Try Stroke's State Park I am camping there on the 16th and 17th then on to the group hang in Pa.
Might even get me a campsite instead of humping it.-

Thanks! Seems a lot of places are booked the 12-13, but I'll check Stokes. I'm all for car camping and something remotely resembling a bathroom. My brother prefers being the hermit and hiking away from everyone. I'm sure I can entice him w/ bacon.

You might be able to get away with stealth in Mahlon, but it's not huge and the rangers do check for parked cars in non-designated areas. The tent sites are very cheap though, and the whole area on the south side of the road is pretty bare bones, so it's not a typical campground environment. You can see and occasionally hear your neighbors though.

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

But are there trees suitable for hanging?

Also, I see you're in White Plains. Any chance you've been to Highland Lakes State Park over near Middletown?

Yup, you can park overnight in Tiorati Circle and find a nice pond/lakesite campsite.

Sorry, yes it is. There are some good details at http://www.myharriman.com/, there are plenty of results turned up in a google search, and I can recommend a few spots if you'd like, depending on how far you'd like to hike.

The New York New Jersey Trail Conference map is invaluable for the area, Amazon sells it for $8.96.
