Thumbs up If You are in Rome,...Swiss Style Outdoor Planning

Just want o share a special experience: If You would like to stay in the woods, You should read at first the laws of Your area.State-law of woods in Switzerland, Law of wood of Your federal state, and the order of the community/city You are living in. If there are no restrictions, You could try to ask the local forester for a permit to stay in the common woods. But beware: There are lot of little parts of woodland, wich has a private owner. So You have to look for, who owns this claim and ask there directly. So I did and getting lucky: At southern Glaris there are no special restriction. The forester helps me to find out, who the owner of the land is, I would like to stay for a 2 day trip. And also helped to find better places to stay. There are many nice places, whrere suddenly rocks are falling down. So, this post is in honor of Ruedi Zweifel, forester and Stefan Schiesser, farmer and landlord. They were very kindly to help the Reverend to a Rest in the woods.
Sounds very easy, isn't it? So if You are in Rome...

How do you know who owns the land? I almost think it's easier for everyone if you just camp in the woods closer to sunset and hike out soon after sunrise.

Is any of that really enforced in any other way than to move on gypsies and vagrants? Hammocking in Switzerland, or most of Europe, doesn't seem to be enforced even if it isn't technically allowed.

Its better to beg forgiveness than ask permission

If you plan a group hang, I understand the need to get permission to hang. For a handful of guys hiking through the country, I've never felt the need to do so. Set at dusk, pack at dawn, make no fire and leave no trace and most of the times no one bothers you, even more so if you choose to stay in a forest.

Initially I read all the rules and regulations and basically most (not all I'm sure) communes in Switzerland have a no wild camping policy. Basically so they can deny the travellers (gypsies) a place to set up camp. Having said that, I've spent many many nights out, in fields / forests / in the mountains and have never had any issues. In France I did read that wild camping is accepted from 1 hr before sunset and 1 hr after sunrise if where you set up is more than a 1 hr walk from a road.... not quite sure how you implement that :-) Really just use common sense, as previously mentioned adopt a LNT approach, set up late and leave early and no massive marshmallow cooking bonfire

It's a good thing HF doesn't have the same User Agreement as WB, which forbids discussions of how to commit illegal acts and get away with it.

In fact, in many cases 'bivouac' is permitted, camping is not.

The hammock is somehow in between, kind of a grey zone.
