You can tape on "wings" w/duct tape, or if you can sew, the SPE (Segmented Pad Extender) is an easy project. The "blue pad" is a bit stiff and not as comfortable to me as the Ridgerest, which is a softer ccf. As DuctTape & BillyBob58 said, make sure the hips & shoulders are covered.
I used an SPE when using pads and they work quite fine

I have a Speer SPE, but it is made for a 20" pad so it is a loaner.

My ENO SPE called the HotSpot Hammock Sleeping Pad Wings works great with a Thermarest or CCF and helps keep the pad in place. It extends the width of the sleeping pad under the torso to about 32"

I just bought the evazote pad from Oware, which is the same thing, only about 7 bucks cheaper. I used it for the first time last night. The temps were between 49 and 50 and I ended up supplementing the evazote with my thermarest z pad. The evazote worked well with the thermarest (which is only 20 inches wide) I use a down sleeping bag tho, not a TQ. I liked the extra width, but will have to trim it down some at the foot end as it stuck up over the top of the hammock.

I too, do not like sleeping on those blue ccf pads, which is why I tried the evazote. It is a lot more comfy. I think the evazote will work well in the summer.

I have the same question about making a pad work. I bought the WM 20" CCF pad. I cut three, 3" pieces from the bottom to form 2 jointed wings for my diy SPE. My problem is that when getting into the hammock, everything gets thrown way out of shape, the edges scallop and everything takes a little bit of shifting to get it set right. Is there a trick to getting into a hammock when using pads? Getting the SPE to stay on a diagonal when getting isn't that easy. Reading the above posts it sounds like the blue pad may be too stiff and something like a Thermarest may be better. I guess I could use part of the blue pad to cut down and layed across the thermarest around the shoulder area.
I'm thinking that I should just spend the time and money on making an UQ. All of this is new to me and I don't have the space on my boat to store gear that I buy/make and find out that I want something else that is more user friendly and comfy. Thanks for any advice.

Wrestling a pad around is part of using a pad. Putting the pad between the layers of a double layer hammock helps considerably, but not completely.

Ultimately most hangers will try an UQ so the sooner you do, the lower your overall cost and storage of unused gear.

    Hey Gmcttr,
Wrestling a pad around is part of using a pad.
That was the word I was looking for! And I know who won most of the time! There plenty of great UQ how-to's here on HF, so I think I will go that route. I'll find a use for the blue pad. Thanks for the reply and have a good one.

I have a wide GG Evazote pad, which I cut down to about 36 inches wide (x72 long). To carry it, I folded it first in half ((to 18x72) and then rolled it and cinched it with a strap, then put it under the top strap on my Circuit pack. It's a little bulky, but it works. At some point I'll probably trim the pad a bit more, but the extra coverage is a luxury for this very cold sleeper.

I rarely sleep in shelters, but when I do, I fold the pad lengthwise and put my sleeping bag on that. Not the most comfortable, but tolerable.

    Hi Tiptoe....
I tried during my trial with the pad to lay diagonally. I really didn't have much luck. I didn't spend lots of time with it so maybe it's doable. Do you sleep on a diagonal with your pad?
    Thanks in advance.
