    Using the Zepplin Bend!!

I wanted to inquire to any long term more knowledgeable hangers out there if the AMAZING Zepplin Bend (my favourite knot) could be utilized as a No Carabiner hammock line to tree strap combo? Its very strong and very easy to undo after huge strain. I'm gonna give it a go. Just thought I'd ask if anyone has attempted this and its failed on them. It'll mean I'm carabiner free - OH YEAH!

How do you tie a Zeppelin Bend on your hammock suspension? I get that you have a strap coming off the tree, but don't you have a loop coming off your hammock? Or do you have a simple line coming off your hammock--no whoopie sling? If so, how do you adjust it? Or do you have a whoopie sling backwards on your hammock (loop on the hammock side)? If this works for you, great! A Carrick bend--to me--is easier to tie. But, it sounds like you're really comfortable with the Zeppelin. Does it work well for cordages of two difference diameters?

The Zeppelin Bend is a great knot, I agree--very secure under load, unties easily. I just don't get how you're using it for a hammock. Please elucidate! Maybe I can ditch the toggles!

I may be easier to untie after load, but it will get old quick. Have you seen soft shackles? They replace carabiner quite well. I prefer personally to keep my line and straps together, but separate from the hammock using a whoopie hook. Keeps me from packing wet lines with the hammock, and the hook serves as a great drip break.

I'm all for removing hardware. I have never tried tying the zepplin bend with rope to straps. You could add a piece of rope to the strap if the zepplin bend does not play nicely with straps. I have put Amsteel on straps using an albright knot and a heddon knot. Take a look at the button suspension. I have pictures of this in that thread.

Do you mean tying and untying the Zepplin bend every time you set up and take down? If so, there are other knots that would be easier to undo but will hold just fine. As falkniven mentioned, I think it might get old quick especially when fine tuning hammock suspension length during set up.

I'd rather just use a truckers hitch BUT not with Amsteel on my suspension. I"ve used it for tarp CRL's though. Then I got some Dutch flyz.

    Guys,

Big thanks for your prompt replies to this question.

Elucidating for all, I am contemplating using a zepplin bend to connect tree strap end to hammock line, no extras. I've still got to do some study on the zeppelin being used for different sized cords, however, I'm confident it won't be too fiddly for me when adjusting for suspension. Mind you, I have eaten words like those many times before. Ha!

Thank you all for your input, I will currently check up on some of these other ideas aswell.

    All the best,
    Urbs.

    Falkniven,

I love the look of this knot, and I'll give it a try, but is it more for fishing lines? It says for different sized lines which is perfect for this situation, but I was wondering about its ability to be undone again after heavy strain. Many bends tend to fuze materials together, hence the reason why I wanted the zeppelin as it won't fuze. But this is a great looking knot, and one I will experiment with from now on. Thanks for passing that on.
