I don't have any data in front of me, but I would be inclined to agree with gmcttr I have a good idea of how much reading he has done on the properties of Amsteel. Keep in mind that Samson rates their lines with a locked brummel, so any changes you make to that eye that stray from the manufacturer's recommendations will weaken it. So, if the application is non structural or is over engendered you'd probably be okay. I personally don't care for significant unknowns in my gear like that, but I guess if you want to be the test subject it won't be an unknown anymore.

The forces on the brummel increase dramatically with sag (leverage).

Plus, it's very possible that a short bury will work itself out when not under pressure when handling.

ISTM that if the locked Brummel is the only mechanism used to 'close the loop', then what is keeping that loop closed is the resistance of the weave of strands to being pulled apart in the 'lock'. The shorter the tail, the less length to contribute to that resistance, buried or not. And I imagine that with an unburied tail, with each use there would be a little more pulling apart, with no healing. A buried tail inhibits the pulling apart.

Me, I naively act as though the rope manufacturers know more about rope loads and slicing than I do, and follow their recommendations more or less.
