    new free material experiment

Our family is in the furniture business. One of our suppliers cover their chairs for shipping with a bag made of the same fabric that grocery stores use for their reusable grocery bags. It has a tiny diamond pattern and I think its called "poly non woven". I decided to use my 10 year old as a test subject and made a kid size gathered end hammock from the stuff. it was breathable and very strong! it even held my 259lb self! (more like a seat than a hammock though) I can't wait till our next shipment of chairs. I think I can sew the pieces together and make an adult size hammock!

I'm also curious if anyone else has experience with this fabric. Is it worth fooling with?

I used it for Bishop bags. Pretty tough stuff and heavy too, but I don't know if I'd trust it for a hammock. I bet there's loads of other things that could be made out of it. Just my .02

Search "neat sheet". Or "dri-ducks" poncho.
Your fabric should be highly water resistant.

Aside from being heavy, it makes a nice hammock sock, top cover, bottom cover, gear hammock, etc. The list goes on. Repuposing material like that is a great way to make gear.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

Great ideas. I don't usually go anywhere my 4Runner or canoe won't take me. So weight is not high on my priority list.

Very cool! I like to see folks repurpose what was "intended" to be garbage. I've seen that stuff, just never a big enough piece to make a hammock from...

My sister in law got at new couch and it was covered in this stuff, of course I snatched it up. My SIL was like "what do you want with that?" My wife chimes in "oh he is probably going to make a hammock or something!??!" yep she knows me well.

Now where did I put that stuff at? HONEY!

Seriously, I think the stuff that I got was much thinner and it would tear easily. I believe I ended up throwing it away.
