    R Value of Mosquito Net

    Hello,

I am new here - as well as to hammocking. I've slept in my WBBB 1.1 dbl three times in my back yard, and plan on taking it out for a week on the trail in a few days.

My question: has anyone noticed if closing the mosquito netting adds anything to the warmth of the hammock? Temps will be dropping to near freezing this week, and so I don't expect to have significant problems with insects. Psychologically, it seems like it would help to zip it closed, but realistically I'm guessing it doesn't add anything. Any thoughts?

    peace,

    featheredprop

I can say I've noticed a difference in temperature when using a net. That's one reason I stopped using my Hennessey in Florida. It made temps that were already miserable unbearable during the warmer months.

There is no R value in a mosquito net..sure they block a lite breeze in the summer and make you alittle more stuffie,,but to prove the point,,take 2 identical thermometers and hang one outside then hang one inside. Mosquito netting will hold no heat in the cold. But mosquito netting has no R value. Let the argument begin.

It has millions of little holes, and is see through. definitely doesn't add warmth.

Well then how about they help with wind chill by blocking some of the breeze?
I just know when I open mine on a cold morning I feel colder air outside than in but have never tested via the 2 thermometer test.

Have to agree. Its why I use a HUG on a 1.1 DIY and I use my netted Hennessey in the winter. The net severely limits air movement.

I don't believe that the mosquito netting has any R value, but it will block a small amount of wind. Which can make it seem warmer by changing the wind chill.

Also the net will block mist. Slept in the clouds with mist blowing...zipped and big difference.

A net is still a solid object, regardless of how many holes it has in it.

Try to get out of your hammock without undoing the zipper and you'll see how that works.
