    Hill People serape

Having limited funds, I have been looking for gear to do more than one thing. I saw the hill people serape and became interested. Has anyone any experience using one as a top quilt? As well as all the other function it can serve. Would I be better off spending the extra for a new shiny top quilt? thanks yall

I use a serape, as part of what I wear. I have shoulder problems, I have a well worn wool serape I take camping. I use is as a blanket, in the Summer.

The tricky thing with gear is as you grow in experience you will want different things. Such as most of us have an ENO Hammock, however, our taste changes as our experience grows.

Part of selection is just personal taste, some is where you Hang, also the depth of your pockets. Some of us want to make our own gear, some members what whatever is the newest, bestest, most expensive. Some of us are very minimalistic.

You must decide for yourself what you like. I still cart around a very heavy Pendleton Wool Blanket that I felted into a half inch thick mass of wool. That blanket will take me down to very low temperatures. I keep it under me at night, not classy, not ultra light, but very trustworthy. I live part of the year in a Subarctic region of Canada, I trust my wool. It works in the cold, what I use does not rip. Some of my down stuff hemorages if you snag it, that could be critical.

Testing is the only way to tell what you like and what fits your needs. Go to a Hang, inspect others Hammocks and gear, see what things look like up close and for real.

I have been debating getting one also. Wish they had climashield apex 6 and were a little lighter in weight.

Can it be worn with more than just a daypack underneath?

Short answer is there is already a quilt version:

No reason why the poncho should not work the same way. I expect there is a difference in the ruggedness of the two designs. The one issue I would consider is how big the poncho is as a lot of excess bulk will get in the way. I do not know how big the poncho is as I did not dig that deep.
    YMMV

Suggest you check out bushcrafters.com and look for the posts by Susanne Williams.
Her posts of "The Girl goes..." contain great videos and gear reviews on wool, serapes and hill people gear.

Her stuff is on you tube.

I always have a wool blanket in sub 50 temps, just in case.

Its supposed to be a great piece of kit. Something else you might want to look at is the Kifaru Woobie. You should also google " HPG Sarape vrs Kifaru Woobie " and you will find a whole conversation on the benefits of each. The answer really comes down to your style of camping whether you are a hiker/camper, a camper/bushcrafter, hunter/hanger etc. I ended up making my own woobie for about a third of the cost and am very happy with it. I use it as a TQ.
