First trip with wife didn't go so well

So, the first overnight hike and hang with my wife didn't go so well. We hiked the big creek rim in the savage gulf and camped at alum gap. I've stayed at this same site 3 other times without incident. So we got to camp, set up everything and start a fire. We went to get water for the night and wouldn't ya know, the creek that has been full of water the 2 other times is bone dry. All we had was 1 liter left in my platypus...not enough for 2 packitgourmet chilies and oatmeal in the morning and drinking water to get back. The rangers lock the gates at dark so we tore camp down as fast as possible and jogged the 3 miles back to the car just before it got pitch black. Not what I had planned but still am adventure. Next time ill call in advance to make sure the creek isn't dry!!!

Bummer, however it was a learning experience without having a serious problem. Always be sure you have adequate water. All ways do your research before you start on an adventure.

Your story is one the two of you will laugh about at a later date.

Your wife sounds like a good "sport".

Hey man, sounds like my kind of luck. Sorry your hang didn't go as planned. Maybe this didn't put the kibosh on her going again with you. Maybe you will get to make another hang together before long. Take care, and NEVER give up! These nice cool nights have sure been nice lately.

I'm sure she'll go again. After all, the ridgerunner is "hers". It might be a while before she gets to go again as she doesn't like the cold very much. I tried telling her that the 20* incubator and my DIY winter top quilt will keep her warm in cooler temps but she just doesn't believe me. She didn't mind leaving anyways because she missed our 2 boys like crazy.

I had drinks in the car and the ranger station has a water fountain. I just didn't want to carry 10 pounds worth of water when I thought there would be a water source. I had a filter but nothing to put in it. It wasn't a life or death situation but the rangers don't like you hiking in the dark.

Getting skunked with water sources is such a bummer. Hopefully she'll give it another chance.

We go up Old Rag Mtn, and on the back side coming down there is a spring coming out of the Mtn. Every time I have been up there water was running.........Except one time. It was rough, counting on that water, and it wasn't there. Luckly there is a river running down the trail another couple of miles, and we were able to get water there.

Live and learn, next time you'll be prepared!.......RR
