I bought a vintage rectangular down sleeping bag off eBay with the intention of harvesting the down. According to the label on the bag the fill weight was 40 oz of Sterling Grey Goose down. So, today I started to harvest the down. The bag is a sewn through design so no internal baffles. This made it a bit easier as I could open up each baffled area and get the down out. I started out using a cardboard tube over the end of the vacuum cleaner wand with a thin sock over it's end. This worked but was painfully slow and a bit messy. I decided to move the operation outside as the temps were nice and no wind. I continued with the tube but it was just taking too long. Since there was no wind, I cut a slit down the middle of each baffle and transferred the down by hand into my plastic bag. This went much faster but I did have to sacrifice a lot more down this way. But, I could tell that the feather count was very low and the down was of a high quality. Probably 700 to 750 or so. Nice white down. Once I had gotten as much as I wanted, I went in and weighed my bag. 32 ounces of downy down. More than enough to make a nice top quilt and some other down goodies.
I wanted to make a Down Recovery Unit (DRU) like the one that drifter made but was unable to find the pump.
