Living in southern nh i have the opportunity to hike Monadnock quite often...it is a great day hike absolutely and the views are just as good as any in the whites for the effort it takes to reach the summit. And your right, there are so many unprepared day hikers on this mountain its scary...the thing that frightens me the most is seeing babies strapped to their parents backs especially on the descent...there are some really super steep sections and one slip and i don't even want to imagine.
And the weather at the top is a lot cooler than the bottom and i see people in little more than t shirts...and they are always huddled with their arms wrapped around them...
monadnock may not be the biggest mountain but it should always have your respect.

+1 on respect! The change of weather/temp conditions that can occur here in New England's higher elevations can get extreme real quick.
