Va - Where to go during the shutdown

I'm new to Va and the very few locations I do know (and want to go test out my cooler weather sleeping system), as my luck would have it, are all located in National Forests closed during the Govt. shutdown. As if I needed another reason to not like the politicians, now they're screwing with my hang time

Can anybody recommend some good places to go for an overnight? Somewhere near Leesburg would be a real bonus to cut down on the driving.

    Really appreciate any help folks.

Elizabeth Furnace (Maneka Peak). I was there Monday. Great set of trails. About an hour from Leesburg.

There's plenty of hiking in GWNF west of I-81 also. Like Wolf Gap to Big Schloss, Wolf Gap to Tibbet Knob, Mill Mountain.

    Check for hikes here:

I just came back from Mt. Rogers. It's in a national recreation area but guess what - THEY CAN'T REALLY CLOSE AN ENTIRE MOUNTAIN.

If you check that webpage you will find plenty of hikes. If you need more info I can post the specific names of some I have taken.

The only thing I'm not sure about - Even if they closed the recreation areas, as long as the forest roads are open you can get where you need to go.

Both gave great advice. I did Signal Knob, Meneka Peak and Massanutten trails two weekends ago and camped overnight. Not an issue. Last weekend we did a backpacking trip out in WV, on Spruce Knob/Seneca Creek (west of Elkins, WV). All these places are listed in the link above.

I never had a problem -it is a safe remote area. If you fish, there is a nice trout stream. It will be 5 to 10 degrees colder there than Leesburg.

Also, that Fort Valley road goes all the way through to the GW forest with lots of camping areas along it.
