marking Sil

I am making a new 3/4 UQ and I am using sil as a top layer. I got grey sil from Speer. I have worked with sil before and always was able to either hide or erase the markings made by sharpie with some denatured. I did a spot check with the grey which is translucent. It removed a lot of the marker but not all. Now I wish I had ordered black but that decision has already been made. So does anyone have any ideas on how I can mark where the baffles will go? I usually use tape for the baffles, but that won't stick. The only other idea I had was to iron creases in it. Any insight will be rewarded with a big thank you.

Have you tried tailors chalk or tailor's wax? I don't know if they would stick but they are intended specifically for fabric so they don't stain the way a sharpie would. That failing there is a product the wife has called "Glad Rags" which are magic markers intended for decorating fabric. I don't know if it would remove with denatured or not. But it will mark sil.

She also has a white pencil Eagle Verithin 734 which will mark on sil and does not seem to bleed through like other options.

Edit: See if you can find some Tailors wax. She has a Binney and Smith product called Staonal which is a wax crayon "#1 For all checking purposes" It marks on the sil but does not bleed or show through. This is white. It looks like it could be ages old so whether it is still availqble I have no clue. It shows up as current on google.

I bought something similar to what Rev is saying. The one I have is pencil with a crayon like material inside. I have a blue and white and both work well on sil. After your done it will wash /rub off. I beleive I got it at Jo-Ann Fabrics

Have you tried a china marker? They mark pretty well on sil and usually just rub off.

I have used the white pencil from Joann's with good success. It washes out, is water soluable.

I used white-out pens. Worked pretty good. Once it dries, it sticks OK on the sil. When you're done you can scrape it off with your fingernail.

I've been using one of these for the past 6 years, and I've still got probably 30% of it left. Easy to use, comes off completely with water/spit and lasts *forever*!

when I was marking my silnylon, both topside and bottomside pieces, what I found was that I used a sharpie that was close to the color of the silnylon and instead of marking lines, I put little dots. Then when I sewed the no-see-um to that piece of silnylon I used the same color thread as the marker and the little dots just disappeared into the stiching line. This also works really well if you actually want to sew with a thread that will show up, just use a sharpie that matches the thread. I did use tailers chalk but it tended to dust out to anything that touched that piece of silnylon. Hint here, if you can keep the chalk from touching anything until you've marked all the lines on one piece of the silnylon, you can carefully lay the other piece of silnylon on top of it and i found that enough of the chalk transfered over so that my top matched exactly with the bottom. Then I marked both of them w/the sharpie dots.
