I think I'll bring my SOG tomahawk which is pretty light (24oz). The back end has a nice sharp point so that should be perfect for smashing ice. And of course for cutting wood.
By the way, even though I was just making fun of Accuweather's rediculously long and inaccurate forecasts in another thread, they just reached our first day:
Jan 10 2014: Snow at times, 25°/18°
I like it!
I was hoping to be lower then the Minnesota boys . Oh well
I'll have to see if I can make it. Just got weekends off at work for a while.
Come on up . Couple of guys from your neck of the woods are coming .
My buddy is waiting to hear on his time off, if he gets it he's coming with me. It will be his first time hammock camping! His first time winter camping as well- I hope it gets cold and snowy! It's my first time winter hammock camping so it should be a great learning experience!

I believe that risk is a big part of life and should be embraced .
However back in 2010 a buddy of mine assumed that winter camping would be a cake walk and came down to my campsight at dark with a Walmart sleeping bag and blue jeans with a Carhart coat .
At about 3:30 in the morning I had wrapped him in an insulated poncho with a coleman single mantle lantern between his legs . He was shivering violently and was somewhat incoherent . It got down to 9 that night but there was a brisk wind and standing by the fire was not nearly enough .
I should point out I too had a miserable night because of a lack of correct gear . I promptly bought an MSS army cold weather sleep system which will keep you warm but is not the best option for everyone .
It would be a good idea to try hanging in the backyard any chance you get especially on windy nights to dial in your gear .

yeah I've spent a few nights in the cold in my hammock, nothing below 30 yet. I'm working on an UQ protector and an over cover. I've got good sleeping bags and pads for going to ground so if the hammock system isn't working I'll do that. we are going to do a test run hopefully before we go to see what needs to be addressed. if all else fails, I'll get up and hike out. I know winter camping is no joke, I've frozen my butt off a few times. Both of us are no strangers to cold, we both worked as highrise window cleaners through all four seasons. There is nothing colder than 20 stories up in the wind in the middle of winter, dipping your hands into a bucket of water that won't freeze because you've got methanol in it!

Cool . I certainly don't mean to act like I'm some kind of expert or anything . I still feel a little guilty inviting Kenny back in 2010 without prepping him a little .
You're definitely right about the high rises in winter . I had to change out a compressor on the tallest building in Fort Wayne in February one winter . It was on the chiller they used for their computer room AC . It'd be like 5 MPH down on the ground and about 5 times that much the 28th floor roof . Took me about 3 or 4 days and about a week to thaw out .
oh no worries man. I'd rather be with a few guys who care if I'm prepared than people who don't! winter camping is serious. I'm no expert by any means either. I just want to enjoy the beautiful woods in the winter! Looking forward to having some fun!
