Thanks Doctari - I'm gonna see if I can infect him with the DIY bug with an offer of some discount fabric to help take the initial sting of the DIY-bug .

I had just read through the blackcat directions again, they really are a fantastic resource for the novice tarp maker. Many a lesson to be gained!

...offer to buy a used HH stock tarp for 20 bucks or so and you'll probably get some takers since nobody really seems to like them much. Light weight? as light as they come. Good quality? absolutely. Too small to do anything but adequately protect your hammock from rain? definitely. Cheap at 20 bucks? you bet! maybe that's good enough!?!?!?

I actually was considering for my boys one of the Etowah Outfitters *standard* tarps to begin backpacking with. I found a 10 x 10 at www.bigrockoutfitters.com for $41.75. It was made out of 1.9 taffeta ripstop with a urethane coating, weighing in at 29 ounces. I thought a great price, great rain coverage, and ok weight to see if they were going to stick with it. The guy that owns the place "Terry" is great to answer emails on any questions you have.

You could make one of these:

    4 1/3 yards of silnylon.

hey guys, thanks again for all of the ideas and advice. i'm really wanting to do my first DIY project and it's between the BlackCat posted by blackbishop or the design directly above me (MrPrez). It really just comes down to how much coverage I want. advice... opinions... preferences?

I've bought my SilNylon from: http://www.owfinc.com/Fabrics/NylonW...stop:%20Coated
If you buy 2nds, the price is only $5.60 yd. Bought 2nds many times and never had a problem. They are good people to work with.
