That's a great question, how do you keep anything warm that is exposed. Heck how do you poop, can't imagine dropping my pants in that weather.
Curious what you think happened with the finger? Just can't imagine -40, it was 30 and really windy today and it felt really cold. I wasn't dressed right but still, you were 70 degrees colder!!
Good job. Wish I could watch the video tonight!
FB Hang in Finland, MN. Two dates posted, one her for the January 16, 2014 and the other on the calendar for January 23, 2014 or so. Which weekend is correct?
Like a sausage hanging in the wind.
Without reading through the thread, I *think* the 23rd is another in Wisconsin. 16th is Finland, MN's.
I'm sure shug will chime in with his expertise but when pooping in -35º weather I always lay a small cutout of a ccf pad over a log or on the seat of the SHT potties if they aren't covered in snow. I wait until the warmest part of the day if at all possible.
As for cooking you have 3 options:
1, don't cook. Just bring meals and bars that will be edible (not frozen solid) in those temps. I do this on overnighters.
2, bring lots of fuel and stay close to the stove. Cooking in the pot means you have to clean the pot and that is the worst part. You must clean it witht the stove running (or it will freeze while cleaning) which wastes fuel. Your hands will stay warm working close to the stove.
3, bring an insulated bowl with a lid. I learned this one from my climbing partner. This last trip we only used the stove for boiling water then I brought a big coffey mug so I tossed my soup mix, beans, and shredded cheese inside the mug, added boiling water, put the lid on and hugged it in my legs while the soup cooked in the mug. This works great cuz you don't have to clean anything in the cold and you conserve fuel that would be used for simmering your food.

I pre-cooked a bunch of bacon and cut up beef sticks, fatty salami, fruitcake (compliments of HF member book), chocolates. Boiling water for meals like Packit Gourmet Texas State Fair Chili is easy enough. High calorie foods. We had fresh meat Sunday cooked on a fire. Monday we snacked all day long on the pre-cooked foods. Oatmeal and grits for breakfast though Strung Out made a big breakfast for us Monday morn with sausage, eggs in a carton and hash browns in a small fry pan. The fire made a lot of this possible.
Haaa…pooping is not that bad. I wait until I am up and warmish. Just drop the layers and go. I sat right on the fiberglass latrine that I dug out of the snow. Cold but kinda fun. Your body seems to accept the short exposure.
My wee touch of frostbite….a blister. Gotta keep an eye on it.

OUCH.....That frost nip is probably going to bother you for a long time.
I try to never have any exposed fingers at very cold, I always keep on the liner gloves. To make sure I do I put them on before the wristies
For me it hurts even to handle the cold nylon of the quilts.
It is much harder to do fine work, takes a lot longer, but I try to make most of the gear work with mittens on. I will completely change a piece of equip if I cant.
Tarp and lines are a big thing for me, summer, cuben fiber & braided mason line gram weenie, winter, 70D coated nylon, 500 cord figure nines, gear hog
Frosted eyebrows and rosy cheeks, looking more like old man winter than before
Nice work Shug!!! I hope the finger heals super fast. Can't wait for the hang......
I had these thin Manzella gloves on under my possum down and since I am left handed the thumb, index and middle digits had small tears from handling stoves and such. The middle had the biggest hole so…..there ya' go. Cocky Shug of the Third Person gets bitten by Mean Ol' Jack of the Frost.
