Or as I call my boys, Stuper Heros.
-28*C here this morning on my thermometer. That's the coldest it's read this year. And I'm not done my quilts to test yet.
It is good to have a buddy on a possible real cold outing.
I know Strung Out is a good choice.
A balmy 36f here today, your cold should be here soon though
Be safe and prepared. Looking forward to the report
I was visiting my parents for Christmas this past week. Got solid cold last night/ early this morning. Bigfork would be the closest town for readings, but we were about 30 miles from there. The low was -28. Add the wind to that at the windchill reading was as low as -55. I was pretty warm, but woke up occasionally to my underquilt slipping off. I added toe warmers half way through the night and that helped immediately. Thanks to my new winter tarp I made and good site selection I was pretty good to go. A new low for me so I'm feeling pretty confident.
Shug- looks like it's going to get crackin' cold for ya up there! Nice area for sure. Might as well pick up some extra liners for your new mukluks. The Chocolate Moose is a must! Looking forward to the trip report.
Could one of you fellows tell me how far of a hike in you have . That is from the cars if someone gets too cold and needs to bail out . Our upcoming hike into the Huron Natl forest is 1.5 miles which I think gives us a pretty easy solution if someone gets too chilled . Im also bringing a small teepee to warm up anybody with uncontrollable shivering or the like . I see you also are bringing a pretty good first aid kit so Ill have to make sure that's covered . Anything else ?
It is about a 40 minute walk, without gear, as I remember it.
Usually if a person can walk they can get themselves warm.
If they have tried to tough it out, and now are to cold to function its very bad.
High energy foods kept close to body temp help a lot.
Key is at very cold temps do not go alone.
Another really big thing is to know how to get a fire going fast. Have all of the stuff to do it gathered before going to bed at night.
If someone gets in a bad way, you build a fire fast, and have enough wood to keep it going already gathered.
Never have tried one at -20f, but it would be interesting to know if any one has, and what the results were.
I usually carry a kit with me, flint and steel, strike any where matches and a Bic, but they hardly work at 0.
Many combinations of starting materials, from cotton balls & Vaseline, pads with wax, forest duff, shavings, birch bark, fat wood, trioxane fuel tabs, and some other kindling and fuel wood, all in a small bag.
Have never needed it for an emergency, but in winter always have it.
if anyone is curious to see other winter rigs... here is a video from my last trip out. It takes a look at Snipen's, CryOTheWild's, and my own setups for sleeping..... I'm clearly the biggest wuss

I finnally got test last night in some cold weather! Felt good! I brought an extra sleeping bag and pad but didn't need either. Just used my rei kilo 0 degree and my day uq, figured it would be a good test to see how low I could push them. It was -13 when i was going to set up at 11pm last night. Stayed nice and warm though, gives me confidence that I can actually do this.
My friend told me it was -50 in hibbing last night. Now that's a whole other beast.
