    first timer spot in TX?

I've been super busy getting my wife and son equipped for some backpacking. The Car camping thing has gotten old with inconsiderate campsite neighbor roulette.

I'm looking for advise on a place i could take them for short hike in, one to two night trip at a hammock friendly state park or natural area. A no-brainer would be the primitive camping area at Fairfield, but I think a place a little bit more scenic would help convince them that walking for a few hours to sleep outside is worth it. What about primitive areas in other state parks? looking for a place within 3-4 hr drive of North Houston.

The campsite 1/2 mile from Parking Lot #6 on the Lone Star Trail is good, but you'll have to wait for deer season to be over. Its right on Lake Conroe and if its occupied, there's on trail camping at the edge of the lake for the next four miles. And if you really want primitive, there's always that little pond we camped at during at the Second Chance hang---that's only 1/2 mile from Parking Lot #2. But they are primitive in ALL respects.

You could go to Stubblefield and hike a bit down the LST to be isolated, but still close enough to facilities for "emergencies."

Brazos Bend has an Equestrian primitive site in the northeast corner that's isolated from the rest of the park. Hang sites are a bit iffy there, though, and panoramic can be found down the trail. There's good views of the river and such, and there's water 1/2 mile from the campsite and a porta can right there. Its a car camping spot that doesn't see that many car campers (I've never seen it full) so roulette might be a bit more in your favor there. Not really a hike in unless you start from the main park and take the trail there---about three miles.

The primitive sites at Fairfield is loud and the trees are not great. Its close to the power plant so you hear the trucks and the plant all night.

It's close to your distance limit, but Dinosaur Valley near Glen Rose has nice primitive sites just across the Paluxy River and up the hill from the main park. Nice views, good trails, and only a 20-30 minute walk to the park proper for fresh water, showers, etc. (Keep in mind this isn't piney woods...the trees are mostly cedar break and mesquite and the overall feeling is more arid/scrubby than east Texas.)

If you're there with the family, you can drive 10 minutes to Fossil Rim Wildlife Park. There's also a new tourist-trap, dinosaur museum that kids seem to love (haven't been there myself) and of course the dinosaur tracks in the river on the opposite side of the park from the primitive area.

My little guy is 7, and I'm fairly positive they could do at least a 3-5 mile hike in.

Village Creek SP north of Beaumont is nice. It's walk in...backpacking lite.

Funny how relative some things are. Leaving the fighter jets, police helicopters, traffic, sirens, DFW airport southwest approach, dogs, motorcycles and gas wells at home makes me not even notice the plant sounds at Fairfield.

What about hanging in the primitive sites at Pedernales or lost maples?

I’m also partial to the Hill Country. There are excellent primitive sites at Inks Lake SP with scenic hikes across the pink granite outcrops with the blue lake in the background. Best time is April when the wildflowers are in bloom.

Lost Maple and Hill Country SNA are both nice places. The campsite F at Lost Maple is the one I stayed at last Christmas, and there where plenty of tree's.
It is better to have and not need than to need and not have!
