IMHO, I would do a very specific design for your use, and your individual hammock only. Do you have a 12' ridge line? Then do you need 12' of top pipe? When you hang your hammock in minimal length space, how high are your attachments? In that case, do you need 6' tall end pipes? If you minimized the piping to the actual hang of YOUR hammock, you might find that your longest pipe is only 4 1/2 or 5'. That might be a much better answer to your need to reduce pipe lengths rather than to make a larger than needed stand and add potentially dangerous joints.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going to not split the stand into so many smaller sections based on your input, and just figure something else out for portability, if the need arises. Being in PA I am after all surrounded by trees, so maybe portability shouldn't be so much of a concern.

I'm going with two 7' foot single-piece uprights because this is going through the diagonal dimension of my bedroom, and I want to be able to walk under it and still use the room in general. The horizontal bar will most likely be two 6' sections, or maybe a bit under that, like 5'8" or so.

    Thanks again for your replies.

We only use ours for large events. They are heavy and can be a pain but they are sturdy. If you are looking for a portable stand, you can't beat the TurtleDog stand, but it wont fit in a small trunk.

If you stick with the threaded steel pipe and you can't thread it yourself try Lowes, I've had them thread pipe for free that wasn't even purchased at their store.

Would use coupling over unions ,easier to work with ,but use heavy coupling and stay away from cast ,forged or steel are the best
