    Under quilt or top quilt

So, Im currently getting by with a thermarest and and ENO hot spot for insulation. Ive been using this with a 35 degree bag for a few seasons now and I want to up grade to an underquilt and a top quilt but can only afford 1 at the moment. The question is, which one should I get first? The top or bottom?

    It might depend on"
    1) what you already own for a sleeping bag (happy with it?) and what your total weight or bulk aspirations are.
    2) the climate/times you wish to use it.

I think most people progress with top insulation before bottom. Personally, I own both and if I would have to go without one or the other; I would keep the UQ and sub the TQ for a conventional lightweight sleeping bag.

I agree with SGS, the UQ was my 1st and best purchase!

I agree also... the UQ will serve you better in the near term.. the TQ can be put off if you are happy with your sleeping bag.
Un zip your sleeping bag and lay it over you like a top quilt.. it is way more comfortable that way and much easier to get into and out of.. no wiggling to get in and comfortable.
    Hope that helps.

Some top quilts work very well as underquilts, such as the Revelation from Enlightened, so you can get "both" in one purchase and use as needed.

for sure go with an UQ. You can use almost anything as a TQ; sleeping bag, blanket, regular quilt, or just a sheet depending on your climate. An UQ is an UQ and there's nothing worse than waking up cold in the middle of the night and not being able to warm up.

I was in the same boat. I agree with the other responses. I went with the UQ first and am using my sleeping bag like a TQ.

I'm +1 on what others have said. If you get the JRB Old Rag (pricey though) TQ, it has tabs to allow you to use it as a UQ in a pinch. If you check out my thread "less than optimum hang", I was using a JRB Greylock 3 which is a 20* UQ and my top insulation was a 45* sleeping bag. Under me and the bag I also had a CCF w/reflectix pad. thin as all getout, but I was toasty in lower 40s temps, so can't argue with it.

As has been said, uq before the top quilt. And honestly even if you aren't super happy with your sleeping bag, I think the overall benefit of sleeping with a under quilt outweighs the benefit of a nice top quilt IMHO.

Definitely go UQ first. You can improvise on the TQ for a while.
