Tarp carabiner non load bearing concern:p

    Hey guys it's viper!

I almost have my whole hammock rig completely finished!

So I am using a contentious ridge line with my tarp now and I plan on attaching the tarp to the CRL buy clipping on the RL tie out to the CRL onto a prussic knot. On both ends of the tarp (using these type of carabeaners that lare a screw lock) I got them for a couple dollars at Walmart and they are non weight bearing ones but are aluminum so my questin is would these be strong enough to attach my tarp to my CRL on a prussic? Or do you think they would break?

I have always been sort of confused on how strong my tarp needs to be able to stand against on wind and rain snow that stuff.

Just I don't want to be in a storm and the carabeaner that's copied to the CRL prussic knot to break and leaving me and all of my gear soaked.

(I like these kind of carabeaners because theirs nothing sharp on them that could mess up my tarp.
Thanks for all the help guys!

I use 'baby' carabiners in exactly the way you propose and they seem to work fine.

Those 'Quick Links' with the threaded barrel are probably overkill for a tarp, IMO.

Something like these would probably work OK- I've used them for my tarp.

These are a bit stronger and definitely work for a tarp:

Both from diygearsupply.com, but you can probably find them locally....

I also use the type in the second picture for almost everything that needs hanging up of fastening down apart from the hammock itself.
As already said they are great for tarps!

I got these thinking they would maybe be a bit lighter weight these each kne weighs three grams. Total of 6 grams I figuered they may be a but lighter not sure haven't got the chance to weigh the mini ones you have.

Yep, those 'biners from Wallyworld will work just fine. I use one on one end of my tarp currently (though not the one with the screwable gate; mine has a spring gate that's less burly) and haven't had trouble in up to ~35 mph winds.

Besides, which would you rather fail first? A $0.50 'biner that can be field-replaced with a knot or a $100+ tarp that requires sewing to repair? Just a thought...

I don't worry too much about weight, I guess!

The biners don't look be that much added weight, but I'm not sure what purpose they serve. What's wrong with just tarp to prusik? What does the biner add?

SilvrSufr has a good point. I was going to suggest the opposite: don't bother with the prussic. If you wrap the ridge line 3 times around the biner, it will act like a prussic - hold under tension and slide when loose. Either approach would work. Experiment and HYOH.

take your cord, fold it in half, then wrap your prusik. Now, tie the ends together on the tie out. No need for extra hardware...

    or what he said^^
