    Thoughts on UQ shells?

I've been using CC foam for a couple of years now and really would like to move to an UQ. $$ is an issue as everything I do is double (son). I don"t really have the time for DIY. I came across a site that sells UQ shells and you provide the down. Does anyone have any experience with the Lewis UQ shell or any other underquilts.com products. It sounds do-able to me and within my budget. From what I've read down can be a bear to work with. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Have one of his early production runs...in first month or so. Great sewing quality, straight even stiching. Highly recommended.

    UQ shells

Thanks for that info. I think I'll move in that direction. I think I'll have to have a good plan when I load the down. LOL

I made a Barnaby and a Lewis last month. Dave does excellent work on the shells. I filled mine with the down sold by Wilderness Logics. I would have used reclaimed down but couldn't find any locally. All told, it took about 6 hours to stuff and sew up the quilts - could probably do it in half that time now. I recommend you do this - you will be so pleased that you did. Let me know if I can answer some questions for you.

Its great I came across this post. I've finally just made my 3/4 UQ Shell into a fully functional UQ with shock cord, locks and straight cord tonight. I've been thoroughly impressed with the craftsmenship of the UQ. Stuffing the 900fp down was a bit of a mission but this thing is warm. If you want my down-stuffing strategy shoot me a PM, it was a lengthy process but not impossible. I'm not used to sleeping without my CCF pad either, so this will be a good, less bulkier change. In the morning I'll post a thread with a report including pictures.

So far, I've felt no cold spots over the past hour. I'm hanging without "UQ triangle thingies" which I plan to add tomorrow. It was getting late and I wanted to get outside but the head & foot ends seem to be winched up pretty good.

I think the 3/4 shell cost $50 but the down was more expensive. For the sewing and crafting experience, it was worth buying. You save money depending on how much down you want to buy vs buying a complete UQ & suspension I think. Hope this helps, cheers.

    Thumbs up

Lost_bikers work is as top notch as it gets, his shells rock,
When we were in watoga last month i slept in my shorts and had to loosen my draft collar on my Lewis that i got from him.
The craftsmanship as well as the attention to detail, along with great customer service and his willingness to take all the time he had to to help make sure our uqs turned out right was Amazing.
My wife and i could not be any happier with our uqs and the customer service that we recieved from Dave.
If you have any diy skills and are thinking about buying a shell,DO IT!
Dave will not leave you hanging and will make sure your uq turns out great
underquilts.com was the way to go for us and when we are ready to get our tqs that is where we will get them!

The down had us worried but after we got started we thought that it was alot easier than expected, ALOT easier than expected, wilderness logics is the way to go if you cannot harvest, but if you can harvest it will save you alot of money.but this is doable, IMO go for it!
