    Timber Rattlesnake

Yesterday I decided to hike the Pot Point Section on the Cumberland Trail here in Chattanooga and came within inches from stepping on this beauty.

beautiful creature. Glad you saw it before you stepped on it because that would not only be painful but could be deadly.

Cut/Paste from the Wikki on it.

Potentially, this is one of North America's most dangerous snakes, due to its long fangs, impressive size, and high venom yield. This is to some degree offset by its relatively mild disposition [16] and long hibernation period. Before striking, they often perform a good deal of preliminary rattling and feinting.[17] Cist (1845) described how he lived in western Pennsylvania for many years, and the species was quite common there, but in all that time, he heard of only a single death resulting from its bite.[3]

I grew up around these things and they will strike, if provoked, but would rather just slither away without a fight.

According to a local herpetologist, a high percentage of bites from adult timber rattlers are dry. Why waste venom on something too big to eat. But all bets are off if you step on them.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Your right the younger snakes have not learned to control their venom, that snake looks young by what I can see of the rattle.

Around here, the timber rattlers like to hang out in trees at about eye level - makes hiking, and selecting a hammock spot, require some awareness of your surroundings.
