You think that a under-quilt is equivalent to half a sleeping bag?

Let's see my JRB underquilt is about 50" wide -- my sleeping bag is about 58" at the widest (and it's a North-Face with extra wide shoulders). That's not even close to half... you shouldn't even try to make that comparison.

I get that you guys love your quilts-- I like mine too. But I'm not so stubborn to know when to sleep in a tent to stay warmer and when not to (and when to to stay in our RV for that matter). That's all I'm saying. If you feel that you can stay warmer in your hammock, so be it. You don't have to bend the truth to convince me (because you can't), nor do you have to justify your thinking (because it isn't any of my business). Your little jabs are childish, and I will no longer participate in it.

There are many reasons, but I'll just say a few...
    1- Extreme comfort...
2- Can you rock yourself to sleep in a tent?
3- Can you modify your tent to make it warmer, or more lightweight, or lower-space consumptive in three minutes?
4- Most of them are made by small companies in the US of A. So you are supporting our economy when you spend 400$ + on them.

I like that last point, and everything except the warmer part in point 3.

    Why use a hammock

First of all, you don't have to carry two quilts, much less two bags. But since two quilts are essentially equivalent to one bag, how does it make sense that a bag AND mat add up to less than the two quilts?

Take that back, I'm the one that needs to look at your signature.

Don't take this too seriously, please. Everyone knows its harder for someone who doesn't know any better to stay warm in a hammock. That's what this forum is for.

I should have followed my own advice (The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak) . Thanks for the reminder, and I edited my last post to save you the trouble.

    for me the reasons are
    1. in my opinion the comfort to weight ratio can't be matched.
    2. versatility as far as site location, especially if you're stealth camping.

All of my camping thus far has been below treeline, therefore negating the one major flaw I see in the hammock camping.. . what if there are no trees or conveniently spaced large rocks or rock faces?
I believe a 3 pound portable/ pack-able stand currently exists, so I am confident that in the future we will see a 1.5 pound solution.

As far as a woodburning stove in the hammock bad idea dude! I would think you would do better, if you put the stove on the ground away form where you sleep just like you do in that tent, just use a larger tarp with a stove jack and pipe setup like the one on the tent in that picture.

There are several here that have done just that in their Hammock and tarp system. Check out post 10 in this thread.

As well as this one. There is a video in this thread that will give a more in depth look.

I watched the video -- I didn't see a hammock in there (maybe I missed it or watched the wrong one). The pictures seem to show a tent with a hammock inside though. Never thought of that. That'd be nice and cozy, best of both worlds.
