g-line for CRL and tie outs.... issues!

I rigged up my hammock gear cuben tarp with g line for a continuous ridgeline over the tarp and then also used g line for the tie outs. I recently used this setup for a 5 day trip in the smokies.

PROBLEM - On the first night of our trip, the dacron sheath on the g line continuous ridge line snapped when I was tightening down the corner tie outs. The spectra cord did not break, but the orange dacron sheath separated near the tree. The ridgeline continued to function just fine, but with the sheath separated by 4 or 5 inches and the spectra exposed, I had to be careful with the exposed spectra section. On the second night, the same thing happened in another section of the gline where it was wrapped around a tree and hooked with a dutch hook.

SOLUTION - While the 200lb rating appears to be good for the spectra cord, I somehow stressed the dacron sheath beyond its rating. To keep this from being an issue in the future, I am going to switch my CRL back to zing it.

For the tarp tieouts, the g line worked great. A 2 wrap prusik held very well on the tie outs. I will continue to use g line in that application.

g-line for CRL and tie outs.... issues!

I agree with your solution. I have g-line on a couple of my tarps. I really like it for the tie outs by it just isn't strong enough for me as well for the CRL on the tarp. Especially when you have something like stingerz when you can really crank down on the lines. Guy outs-perfect though.

Makes sense to me. I string my cuben taught. I have to use zing it for my ridgeline tie-outs.

I hang a couple of prusiks off of my ridgeline and clip them to my tarp with dutch ridgeline biners. My theory is that the prusik is gripping mostly the dacron sheath, so when too much pressure is applied by cranking down on the tie outs, the prusiks on the ridgeline pull against the sheath beyond its breaking point. While the spectra inner could handle it, the sheath could not... and since the prusik is gripping mainly the sheath..... snap.

I think the G-line is similar to the Z-line from Zpacks. I use the larger diameter Z-line for my ridgeline and the smaller G-line for the sides.
I have not been able to use either type of line with tarp Flyz; it cuts the line rather quickly, even the heavier z-line slick.

g-line for CRL and tie outs.... issues!

Ok, so I am real newbie stuck out here in the middle of the Pacific on Kwajalein. Is there someplace I can go to see what all the acronyms mean??

Such as CRL. I would appreciate any help as I sometimes do not understand what is being discussed.

    Thanks

There is a sticky for acronyms in the Articles section.
