Leroy's Ferry is a Corps of Engineers primitive campground consisting of ten (10) sites right on Lake Thurmond. Each site has a picnic table, fire pit, grill and a pole with a hook for a lantern. It consists of two loops, the first with sites 1-4 and the second with sites 5-10. Each loop has a pit toilet and there is a well with faucet by the entrance to the park. A boat ramp is at the end of the main road into the campground.
This park will be closing next week and will not reopen unless something can be done to prevent it. Due to loss of funding, several campgrounds and day use areas are closing. (Federal Government cut backs)
This is a primitive campground so it would not take much to maintain it. I am also looking into McCormick County Recreation helping. I will be getting with them to discuss this.
I think this would be a great project for the Palmetto State Hangers to adopt this campground and help to maintain it and keep it open.
I have scheduled a Hang for 15-17 November so everyone interested can check out the campground and I will try to get the Corps Manager to visit with us at the site to give us more information. This is a worthy cause and I think you will find this a very nice, quiet campground and a great place to hang.
I have cleared it with The Corps of Engineers for us to have a Hang there 15-17 Nov. So I hope to see you out there. Thank you all, and I think you will not reqret it.
We can plan a pot luck Saturday night if anyone is interested.
