    figure 9's

Has anyone used or had any experience with figure 9's and tree straps? I'm currently using rap rings and carabineers. Have some smaller fig 9's for tarp hanging, quick shelters, etc.... Seems like the fig 9's (bigger size, of course) may save a little weight and have less moving parts. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated....

What do you want to do with the Figure 9's, hang your hammock with them? If so, this thread will satisfy your urge to live dangerously.

The general consensus is that they work for hanging your hammock, but just barely, and with little (or no) safety margin. There are lighter and safer methods out there. HYOH

I wouldn't use one for hanging a hammock, but I do use one for my CRL. It works great but I'm eventually going to switch to tarp flys or stingers since the teeth on the figure 9 seem to chew up the rope after repeated use

Nite-eze sells them in a 4-pack (REI, $10.00) that includes four 8ft lengths of green 2 or 3mm reflector cord. I put them, using split rings, on the pullouts and ridge line of my tarps and hammocks - NOT the suspension of the hammock.

I know how to tie a taunt line hitch, but it is so much easier/faster to do a wrap on the figure 9. Also, it is much easier to do the tension adjustment at the tarp end rather than the stake end.

I haven't used them enough to notice abnormal line wear, but a 50 hank of the reflector cord is only $10. I don't see "wear" being a problem so far. But I do need to try them in wet/windy/cold weather. Having had to deal with knots in winter cold, I think the figure 9's will be great for tensioning. Again, I do not use them for human body suspension.

    Figure Nine with reflector cord

I used the same setup for the last year (Figure-Nine and Reflector cord). It worked great in all climates. I did notice a bit of stretch with wet weather and had to make a few tension adjustments. I just converted over to Dutch Flyz and Lash-it. I used the same lenghts and I like the new stuff better. There is no stretch and the Flyz hold much better. There are no teeth on the flyz so there is no wear on teh cord either. I passed the figure-nines to my son for his setup as he gets lost at night and the reflector cords help him find his bed.

Thanks for the feedback. My big concern was workload and safety.they seem to work well with my tarp but wasn't sure if the bigger ones would be able to hold myself and my hammock. Don't think ill chance it. I'm pretty new to hanging and I'm always looking for new ideas to make life easier. Id still like to save some weight so any ideas...throw em's at me

Whoopies would be a big weight savings. Pretty easy to convert a Hennessy to whoopies.
