Tennessee treats State land the same as anywhere else, per that law. Discharging a firearm isn't allowed unless you are hunting in a designated hunting area and following other laws. Basically, in TN, your regular handgun laws apply for carrying, using, and self protection. I lived in TN when this law changed and it was nice to open carry. I never went into the Smoky Mountains without carrying before that, but concealed of course. Too many close calls with bears, boar, and drunk hillbillies protecting their... crops?

No bear sightings, but there was some poop right on the trail headed up to Mt Sterling (I think its one of the pictures).

I was in the smokies last week as well (over by Fontana). Lots of bear poop... all over the trail.

Saw a bear about 20ft up in a tree. He shimy/slid/fell all the way to the ground when he noticed us and took off down the ridge. When he hit the ground, I felt the impact vibration through my feet. He was about 50ft away when he hit the ground.
