    Question HG Foyle: Like/Dislike/Advice?

So I am going to be purchasing the HG Foyle underquilt shell. Is it really as easy as the make it look to finish? Also any suggestions on the amount of down I should use for 0 degree F. weather that is common up here in MN? Any other advice, comments and concerns about them are welcome also.

Copy and paste from Underquilts.com site: I'd shoot for the 20% overfill as the minimum.

    Winter 0-10 Degrees
    900 Fill : 0% overfill = 10.4 oz 10% overfill = 11.4 oz 20% overfill = 12.5 oz 30% overfill = 13.5 oz

    850 Fill : 0% overfill = 11.0 oz 10% overfill = 12.1 oz 20% overfill = 13.2 oz 30% overfill = 14.3 oz

    800 Fill : 0% overfill = 11.0 oz 10% overfill = 12.1 oz 20% overfill = 13.3 oz 30% overfill = 14.4 oz

    700 Fill : 0% overfill = 12.6 oz 10% overfill = 13.9 oz 20% overfill = 15.1 oz 30% overfill = 16.4 oz

    650 Fill : 0% overfill = 13.6 oz 10% overfill = 15.0 oz 20% overfill = 16.3 oz 30% overfill = 12.7 oz

    600 Fill : 0% overfill = 14.7 oz 10% overfill = 16.2 oz 20% overfill = 17.7 oz 30% overfill = 19.1 oz

Note* For every 10% you gain 5 degrees on average.

There are limits to what overfill can do for you. I would think this is especially true on a bottom quilt...
    YMMV

    Re: HG Foyle: Like/Dislike/Advice?

The guys who sell pre stuffed quilts put 15-25% overstuff in their quilts to begin with. You can generally add 1-3oz extra if you want. This is where I think the diminished returns of overstuff comes in. You add a few oz of 900fp down to a partial uq and you drastically raise the 20% to 30-50%. Each ounce rases it ~10% in the chart I cited above.

    Re: HG Foyle: Like/Dislike/Advice?

Want to make sure we are on the same page here. I'm not saying the quilt at 20% overstuff will add considerable warmth above the rating. Just that 20% is what I've seen from vendors and common practice in the DIY section.

"Note* For every 10% you gain 5 degrees on average."

The site lists the quilt as a 0-10° quilt. With 20% you would be closer to the 0° than the 10, unless I'm reading it wrong.

I made a TQ last year--------any way you do it, down is kind of a bit of a challange to stuff-------but if you take your time, buy down pre packaged in small pouches (like at wilderness logics), and use fronkys method of stuffing down, its doable, and not that bad. It makes a mess, but when your done, it feels kinda good to know you did it all by your self-----sets you apart from 99 percent of the general population who just go out and buy stuff!
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me, either, just leave me alone.
