    Wind Protection?

I recently went out on my first real camping trip using a hammock in the Smokey Mountains and ran into one problem. The wind in that area sucked all the heat out of my underquilt at night. I couldnt really pitch my tarp in a way that kept the wind out (it shifted quite a bit) so I never really could get it adjusted in a way that fixed the problem.

I have the HG top and bottom quilts rated at 20 degrees, it got to be around 25ish with the wind. So I was looking at some options to fix the problems.

I figure I could get a wind break/UQ protector for the cheap option

I could get a UQ with more down (looking at JrB)

Or I could get a winter tarp with doors

What would be my best bet? I've only got enough money to get 1 right now and I'm leaning toward a winterized tarp (stop the wind from taking the heat from UQ, also stop it from blowing across the top and freezing my face). Any suggestions? Advice?

Did you use the weather shield on your NX-250??? That should keep the wind off your face. I use an UQP and it helps a lot with cutting the wind and helping my UQ to work properly. A winter tarp would help also, but I can't help you make that decision. I do use my UQP in warm breezy weather also without an UQ. That is when temps are much higher. So, the UQP can be used all year long.

Following this thread because I'm having the same problem. I have a UQP on order and am hoping that will help some.

Edit to add: I have a HG 0* Incubator + 1 oz extra and have had wind issues in as mild as 40 degree weather, so buying an UQ with more down likely won't solve your problem.

Winter tarp will help but try an UQP first, that will cut down on the heat loss from your UQ. The tarp will help but not as much as the UQP. More down will only provide more heat for the wind to suck out

Good to know. I may just try to UQ protector and see if that solves the problem before I pull out the wallet for a winter tarp.

UQP's seem to work so well that I am about to rig a couple for my wife and myself. Since I refuse to crawl in under my tarp I hang it fairly high and it can lose a lot in wind protection, so the UQP seems a good way to go toward making my UQ's more effective.

Thanks everyone. I ordered the UQ protector from 2QZQ and will give it a test run whenever it comes in. If anything, I can get the tarp later if I find I need more.

    What tarp were you using?
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..
