    Siler Bald

My son and I are going hiking and camping to Siler Bald, NC on the weekend of the 16th. Looking forward to it and will post a report when we return.

I was there last week of September, and the grass was about chest-high all the way to the top, but it was great.

Is there hammock camping allowed around this shelter? I'm planning a trip in early April, but I was under the assumption that you couldn't hang around the AT shelters...

AT Thru hikers can tent or hang, but only if all the space is taken up in the shelter. You can hang at backcountry campsites, but you will need a reservation.

Not GSMNP. This Siler Bald is outside of Franklin, NC, not on the NC/TN border.

Besides that, the OP was 2013.

Yep, I came across this thread via Google and didn't notice that the OP isn't about the Siler's Bald shelter on the AT. Guess we'll pick a route with nights in backcountry sites instead of shelters. Never been a big fan of AT shelters anyway
