I am thinking about making some hammocks for/with my 5 and 7 yr old. Simple gathered end is all. The crinkle taffeta at tableclothsfactory.com seems to be what I want but I thought I would toss it out here to this vast pool of knowledge first. My kids have never used the sewing machine and I am going to show them how to sew. I expect lots of oops and seams going all over the place. Is the stuff from tableclothsfactory.com forgiving?
For straight up simple DIY, the table cloths are great. I have 4 of them for my kids. Plenty of colors to keep them happy. They come pre-hemmed. That is one of the big plusses.
I had my mom show me how to use her sewing ... er ... thread injector a while back and I whipped out several hammocks using various weights of rip-stop (1.1 double layer, 1.7 single and 1.7 double). Granted, I took half a year of home-ick (intentional mis-spelling) in high school many moons ago, but I didn't find any of those too difficult. If they had not been for Christmas presents, I would have felt comfortable letting my kids do them.
