    new hanger ring questions...

    hi friends,

so i am finally off the ground and swinging in a claytor expedition! woohoo...

i figured out the tarp situation and will be going w/ an OES tarp, based upon the reviews from you guys

i have NOT figured out what to do w/ the support system. i keep reading that my stock claytor webbing will leak water into my tent, and i should go w/ some sort of ring system. so my thoughts and questions on that. i'm not 100% sure i really understand the ring buckle system, but here's how i envision it:
-cord goes through hammock and attaches to rings...
-webbing goes around tree and attaches to rings...
-drip line at rings keeps water from running into the hammock

    so here's my questions

    1. if i just get 4 rings and keep my stock claytor webbing for the part that goes from the tree to the ring will that be suffice? i don't understand why i wouldn't reuse the webbing. i probably would shorten the stock webbing if this is the case, b/c i won't need the footage that normally is where the cord will be...

    2. for the part that goes through the hammock and attaches to the rings, should i just get some climbing cord? what sort of break strength/test will i need? i weigh 160lbs...

    1. Maybe, but they are still going to absorb a lot of water and become heavier. Plus, they are stretchy. Get some good polyester webbing. It will repel water better and it is easier to slide through the rings for adjustments.

    2. I know many of us use spyderline for that application. I get mine here.

BTW, the rings will act as your water drip. No need for anything else.

Check out the ring buckle thread. I know it's a mile long but it should answer all your questions.

cannibal your link to the spiderline doesn't have anywhere it indicates how long the line is. it just lists quantity

on that note, how long do i want that part of the suspension system to be?

It is ordered by the foot. They do a terrible job with that aspect of their website. You don't need much for that section of your suspension. I never measure it, but I suspect mine are in the 18" range. I fold it in half and tie the ends together, slide one end through the channel, slip the other end through the loop and attach to the rings. I end up with 5 or 6" ends.

Never a bad thing to have some extra cord laying around.

that sounded like a foreign language to me

so i have a claytor. the webbing attaches to my hammock via a channel built into the hammock (guessing 3 feet wide?). my stock webbing runs through that then tightens up as i hang the hammock. it is not bunched w/ some chord tied around the end like some other hammocks i see. will i not want to run this chord through the same channel as the stock webbing is now?

ultimately, how far do i want the ring to be from my hammock?

So sorry. I forgot we were talking about a Claytor for a minute. Maybe somebody else will chime in that has made the ring buckle mod on their Claytor. I have one of my Claytors still stock, but the other one I switched out to ring buckles and 'bunched' the ends like the other hammocks.

How far you want the rings is dependent on how long your tarp is. My goal is to always have the rings under the tarp. It assures me that the rings will drip all the rain water and none falls on the final length of suspension.
