    Tablecloth Hammocks: Comparing Compressed Size

It is safe to say that the DIY bug has bit me and bit me hard. After making a tablecloth hammock for my wife's Christmas present, I realized that building it was so fun and the finished product was so comfy that I just had to build myself one (with a few mods, of course). After finishing my DIY hammock, I couldn't help but notice the difference in size between my existing hammock (Grand Trunk Ultralight), my wife's hammock (DIY crinkle taffeta tablecloth), and my DIY hammock (DIY 100% polyester tablecloth). Both tablecloths came from tableclothsfactory.com. Both tablecloths work great, but the 100% polyester is much bulkier. Here is a pic of all three hammocks and the requisite nalgene bottle for comparison purposes. Both DIY hammocks are in a 4-liter stuff sack that I got from REI.

Thanks for posting this, it's useful info. With both in hand do you seen any benefit to the plain polyester, other than it being a little less expensive?

Good to see these compared. I like to pack light with a smaller pack and compression size matters. Thanks

The plain polyester feels thicker so it might be more durable, but it would really take some extensive side-by-side testing to determine that for certain. Other than that and price, I see no clear advantage to the plain polyester.

    Apples to apples...
The size of the hammock will be determining factor on comfort and packed size. If both the store-bought and the diy hammock are of the same exact size, then the comparison is fair. If the diy is bigger/longer or made from more robust fabric, then I don't see how that matters/compares?

It's a good sort of rough estimate - obviously thicker fabric (tablecloth) is going to be a bit bulkier than a lightweight purpose built hammock. It's nice to know by how much.

If you look at the two DIY hammocks, their packed sizes are actually quite a bit different, despite the fact that they are both 60"x126" in size and have the same whipping. They have different suspensions, but I think the size difference is negligible for this comparison (in case you're curious, the taffeta is cinch buckle and the polyester is dynaglide whoopie slings). The DIY hammocks are also in identically-sized stuff sacks. The taffeta would compress down more than it shows in the picture and there is plenty of room left in the sack, but the polyester one left very little extra room.
