    Favorite tarp stakes?

What's your favorite stake for securing a tarp?

Currently, I'm using whatever stakes I can find in my closet.
I have a choice between light (5/8 oz) and bendy (shepherd/crook-top wire stakes from an old Eureka Timberline) or heavy (1 5/8 oz) and strong (triangle top wire stakes from an old BSA Voyageur tent).

This seems to be a popular question of late.
    MSR Groundhogs are my favorite.

I sometimes use titanium shepherd-hook stakes but they really only work when the soil is just right. If it's too hard (so that you need to pound) or too soft (such that the stakes might rip out of the ground) then MSR groundhogs are much better. I'm finding I'm using the groundhogs more and more.

A couple of sharpened sticks I find on site. Doesn't get any lighter, plus I don't have to worry about losing them.

Groundhogs don't bend as much when I pound on them and work really well keeping things taut when you've got gusty wind and looser soil. I've also tied off to manzanita, rocks or random bushes.

I use the groundhogs, also. They have a cord through the tops of them that makes them very easy to remove from the ground.

    MSR Needle stakes

I've been pretty happy with MSR needle stakes. Although one did pull loose recently when snow accumulated over 2" on my widely pitched tarp. (Soil was pretty loosely compacted, on a slope with accumulated pine needles.)

The individual weight of.35 ounces is favorable compared to the .71 ounce groundhogs. I also like how they pack away super compact. I've used them satisfactorily as marlion spikes too.

I might supplient my needle stakes with one or two that have more holding power. When I do the groundhogs will be worth considering.

After having a number of times where the wind was way too feisty , I only use MSR Groundhogs.
