    New San Diego guy

Good afternoon everyone! I just got home from work, and sat down to work on my hammock. I will be splicing away with the movie Hang Em High in the background. Sounds like a good afternoon to me!

I have been reading threads, watching Shug's videos, and learning TONS! Right now I am trying to figure out if I want to attach a ridgeline to my hammock, and if I do, I am not sure what material to use! So much information, with so many choices! My wife is not going to like this hobby....

I hope to connect with you guys to learn as much as I can-- So far you guys have been a great wealth of information. Thanks!

The wife may not like it, but she'll be glad that you love it! Hammocking, splicing, making hammocks, it never ends...

As far as ridge line material, I used 330 test dyneema cord from zpacks. A 50 ft hunk is $12 I think, so kind of expensive but for the weight/strength ratio I'm in love with this stuff. Its the 1.4mm z-line slick. It has a coating on it that makes knots like prussics slide well. (Plus it come in blaze orange)

Cheers to your endeavours as a hammocker...

Hey there feller…..here is some ridge line intel from tothewoods.net….http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeHammock4.html
I used some utility cord for a long time when I was new. Worked fine. Now I use more high-tech line with no stretch….http://shop.whoopieslings.com/Adjust...e-Line-ASR.htm

Welcome from the Jersey Shore. I don't see how people do without hammock ridgelines. I like adjustable ridgelines (basically a Zing-It whoopie sling and a Dutch Ridgeline Biner) - let's you adjust a bit in the field.

I hang all my gear off my hammock ridgeline - backpack, shoes, clothes. I don't leave anything on the ground 'cause I've had critters steal my stuff, and sometimes it rains so much your gear can wash away. If you lay in your hammock on a feet left, head right diagonal, the pack can hang feet right and you won't even know it's there!

A big welcome from the cold north. The hammock life is for people who like to fiddle with things.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and tips!

This is what I have so far-

    ENO Doublenest
Continuous loop through the gathered end to a dutch hook to a whoopie sling to a tree strap.

If I were to add a ridgeline, where would I attach it? The continuous loop? Through the gathered end? At the Dutch hook? What works for you guys?

Also, when it comes to material, what kind of stress will be exerted on the ridgeline? Will 1.2 Tech line be strong enough or do I have to go with something like amsteel blue or dynaglide?
