    Cool Extreme First Hang

Let me start by saying hello, my name is Daniel and I live in Australia and I am now a proud owner of a Hennessey Hammock Explorer Deluxe zip model.
My last pack run I decided that I would set up the HH for the first time to see how easy it is to hang. I had laid it out at home on the floor to attach the fly and pack into SS's (good thing I did). Half way through my pack run through the sand dunes of the beach I run at the storm clouds rolled in (I had checked the weather, I knew it was coming), perfect time to put the Hennessey to the test!!
The rain started to come down gently as the edge of the huge storm clouds passed over head. Slowly getting wet I was searching for a good spot to hang, the rain was getting heavier, I found two trees far enough apart, but not a good location in terms of natural cover from wind, but quite exposed.
In hurry to hang I secured with bowlines, they worked fine. The hammock was about 6" off the ground with me in. I didn't have tent pegs so I fashioned one out of a branch with my knife and used the knife as the second peg.
By this stage the storm has kicked into high gear, lightning strikes hitting **** close, the winds was blowing 30-35 knots easily gusting at 40! I'm bone dry reading a magazine! In a pinch I even wrapped my pack up in my drizabone and hung from a tree with paracord, everything stayed dry!
After the storm I shook off the water on the fly, rolled up the hammock and slid the SS's on, packed my bag and finished my pack run.

Since that day, I have found my pack run respite spot, perfect cover from wind, perfect tree distance, wide canopy trees to slow down the rain. I have setup there a few times now, it's like a home away from home!

Nice test of a really good kit, Aussie! My 1st hammock was a HH Explorer & I still often use it. Welcome to HF......from the "Wilds of western Mass!"

Welcome Aboard Aussie ! That's a great story. You picked a great kit to start your addiction. Can't go wrong with a Hennessy.

I hang in a Hennessy Safari Deluxe with a Hennessy Hex Tarp. I also have a WBBB with a Superfly. I usually use the Safari Deluxe when I don't have much of a hike planned. It's a little heavier. The Blackbird on the other hand, with adjustable straps is substantially lighter and is better for my old bones when I'm backpacking into the outback.

All the best and again, welcome to the Forum. Hope to see you on here often.

you guys get bush fires like we get tornadoes in the USA

The bush fires move extremely quick eating everything in there path.

If I lived where you are I would look at getting something in my pack to protect me from this. Not sure what you would do though. Being they move so fast maybe drop the pack and run like mad. Maybe after camp is setup dig a hole just in case in the dry season.

When I was reading the comments on this video it says "They are the arsonists who set alight bushfires, and who often strike on days when soaring temperatures and high winds combine to create the most hazardous conditions" Which is crazy!

But this is something I would really think about.
