Large guy, one layer or two of 1.9.

I have decided to make my own hammock. So I found some ripstop in the 1.9 weight today. I went ahead and purchased 2 4 yard pieces. I am thinking I should have maybe just left it at 1 8 yard, and then doubled it over. Here's the catch. Unfortunately, I am sitting at the 300lb limit right now. I am wondering if any of the people with experience on the larger end of the scale would go with the single ply of 1.9, or double it up for the extra insurance.

Now I went camping a few weekends ago, and spent a couple of nights in a Wallyword special that said it was rated to 300lbs, but I spent a lot of time laying there wondering when I was going to hit the ground.

Any concensus on this? I am thinking the extra 8 ounces (guesstimate) will be worth it and just sew the two 4 yard sections together and go from there.
I might sleep better just knowing I am not on the edge of a weight rating.

I would go with a double layer...
What is piece of mind worth?
Plus, you will increase durability and have less stretch which improves the hammock lay

I'm not certain on the rating. I think someone here did a stress test of the different ripstops.

I am 220-ish and never had a problem with single layer 1.9. I left 2 people in my hammock after I had over 100 nights on it. The hammock came out fine. But I broke the speer webbing after the 4th time. No fault of the webbing. It was old, worn, and loaded 100 lbs over the rating.

Maybe make 1 dual layer for now and see how it works.

Having a dual layer hammock has many advantages besides the weight limit. It gives you a pad pocket, it gives greater bug protection, it makes the hammock stretch less. And so on. I am a small woman, and I have a dual layer 1.1 blackbird because I wanted the dual layer specifically.

I would definitely go with the double layer for the advantage of the pad pocket and piece of mind. I have a double layer claytor and I really like the pocket.

you will get a good bit of stretch with 300 in single layer 1.9, but it would probably be strong enough to use. how long it will last is another story though, those things don't last forever if you use them alot

Thanks guys. Double layer it is..

Now I wish I had just left it as 1 8 yard section, and not had him cut me two 4 yard sections. Of course, I could pick another color for the other half, and have it like a reversible jacket.

Thanks for the quick replies. Now off to build my sewing skills back up.

Add: So do you think I should just hem the edges together, or maybe sew in a few runs either parallel or perpendicular to the hammock? My thinking is that it would keep the two sheets from just rubbing around on each other, but then again it might cause ridges which could be uncomfortable.

Leave enough room on one side to slide a pad in between the layers. Trust me on this. You will want to be able to do that. Whether you leave room at the ends and sew them together in the middle of the seam, or sew part way down on either end and leave the opening in the middle is of course up to you.
