    UQ or Kifaru Doobie?

Has anyone tried using the Climashield Doobie in place of an UQ? The weight is comparable, the Doobie is more weather resistant and multi-functional...and if you cannot hang (above treeline) and must go to ground. Thinking maybe for BP HUNTING TRIPS the Kifaru Doobie may serve the situation as well or better. Anyone tried it?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. It might be tricky to eliminate gaps and drafts, but if you tinker with it, you might get something workable. I've used a cheapo sleeping bag before, strung up with shock cord, as an UQ and it worked well for milder temps. Never tested that setup in colder temps because now I have an UQ.

You are right about the Doobie being a workhorse. I just bought one recently and it may just be my new favorite piece of gear. Love that thing! I don't think I will ever make a trip without it from here on out.

    Good luck and happy hunting!

I have no experience, but I just looked up a picture of the doobie and it looks like it is going to take up a lot of room in your pack. From what little I've read looks like the doobie is a 20-ish° unit where you could get a solid 20° down UQ that will really keep you warm to 20° and be lighter and more compact. Both Underground Quilts and Hammock Gear will make one out of Multicam, and UGQ uses water resistant down, I'm not sure about HG and the UGQ's can be laced up and used as a TQ when going to ground.

For me, I've always had a hard time staying warm with synthetic bags vs using down, hence my preference.
    Good luck,

I've had problems staying warm in synthetic bags as well, but the Doobie is just different. The Combat Climashield in it is top notch and really keeps you warm. Worth every ounce of weight, in my opinion, especially if you are looking to have a piece of gear along that is multi-functional and will dry quickly in wet/humid conditions.

I currently use mine primarily as a top quilt or sleeping bag liner depending on the temps. I've gone down to 16* F so far with this set up and was toasty. (My sleeping bag is only comfort rated for 34* F and I can only take it down to about 40* F before needing more, so the Doobie is really pulling the bulk of the workload in the colder temps).

That said, I do absolutely love my Hammock Gear Incubator UQ. It is so light and compact, yet so warm it feels like it must have its own furnace burning. I love the contoured fit of its design, really prevents cold drafts. To the OP, If you do want to spend the $ on an UQ, you can not go wrong with Hammock Gear.

Hammock Gear is using water resistant down now.

I have a DIY Woobie i made with climashield. I use it as a TQ in summer. As someone else has said i think you'll end up fiddling allot to get the Doobie to fit right as an UQ. It can be done, but i would rather just have an UQ without the fuss.

Yep, that pretty much sums up my opinion in one nice sentence without all my babbling in the way. Nicely put.

There are loops sewn in around the perimeter of the Doobie that could be used to attach the shock cord to. The Doobie is basically a higher tech version of the military poncho liner.

It is made with Climashield Combat which warrants the higher price. The Doobie is rated for about 20* F. An actual military style poncho liner would be lucky to suffice in the 40s.
