    Windshield reflector

I found a good deal on some windshield reflectors at Canadian tire $1.99 each. I was thinking of sewing 3 together to make a double thick full length pad. But would I be better off attaching them to the top of a ccf pad? On a side note i have been experimenting with a synthetic sleeping bag as a UQ. Weight isn't a concern for me as at my size as my pack weight is the least of my worries. But i do find a bulky pack cumbersome. I'm trying to the cheapest least bulky insulation system i can until i can justify a down tq and uq.

Depending on the temperature, just ones of those would be enough to keep you warm. Instead of sewing them together or attaching it to a CCF pad, how about sewing a sleeve to combine them. That way you can experiment, add layers and you could even sew wings to put pieces of CCF pad into to keep your shoullders and sides warm (known as a segmented pad extender or SPE).

That is a good idea. Would it be a good idea to add buttons or velcro to the spe and my sleeping bag to prevent slippage?

I was a huge propoent of these (as supplemental insulation to a UQ) until the temps got around 30-40°. There was a TON of condensation on my back and bottom. I think that was what actually woke me up in the middle of the night. I think it also depends on humidity, dew point, wind, etc, but I guess you never know for sure.

It's too bad really. These things are lightweight and serve other purposes like a sit pad, stove wind shield, something to stand on when getting dressed. I wish I could try it again as an emergency "butt warmer" if the underquilt isn't keeping up, but I don't want to chance it.

I found the thin ones from the dollar store gave a real boost at the EGL fall hang, when it got down to around 5 degrees C (40F?) but you don't want full coverage, just your butt and lower back.

I tried reflectix as a full length undercover this past weekend (20$ for a roll) and it was warm with no condensation, but bulky as heck and it really doesn't bend. I think it would be best served as a really short pad under your butt.
