Has anyone converted military sleep system bags to top quilts?

My mom LOVES when i give her DIY projects, haha! I was thinking about converting my military sleep system into a top quilt. I have the green patrol bag and the black intermediate weather bag. They button together and can apparently keeo you down to 0*. since its military rated, i assume the general public can use this comfortably down to at least 10-20*

So has anyone cut the zips and seams and made into a quilt? I was thinking about keeping the foot box so i can stick a small pad in there for feet insulation. My feet always get cold.

I use the black bag as a top quilt in the teens, I still have the zippers. Let us know how that works out.
When I was a kid the only time we were in the house was to eat and sleep.

ok cool. I was worried the zippers could snag/wear the hammock and shorten its life. think if im to try anything, I would just cut out zippers and sew them back up, leaving the foot box alone. I would lay on my pad, and just use the bag as a blanket with my feet in the bottom portion.

I need to do an overnight soon and test it!

I will be using one as a top quilt this weekend. Going into mid 20s. I'll let you how it works.

That's exactly what I do, except I didn't bother with getting rid of the zippers. I've used the green bag down into the low 40's/high 30's and was starting to get cold at those temperatures. I have yet to use the black bag outside of sleeping in my garage, and I didn't check what the temp was in there when I did so.
    - We're never going to survive this!!
    - Nonsense. You only say that because no one ever has.

I have read that the zipper could be a problem and will be taking it out. For a top quilt you would want to leave the foot box alone, if you don't have a full uq you might want to put some sort of pad in the box.

Do you have specs on the sleep system? How much fill? What kind? How much does the green and black weigh?

    I had the same concern.
This is why I was looking at top quilts.
The newer zippers on sleeping bags are smaller and less "pointy/sharp" .
I have a army sleep system and the zippers are crazy big and the zipper pull has a sharp piece If i remember correctly.

they are heavy, I sleep in the green all the time when not backpacking, no zipper mod. I believe the whole system of 2 bags and gortex bivy weigh in at roughly 6 pounds. not sure on individual bags though.

    They are Synthetic.
Never weighed them but they are BIG.
Green summer bag is smaller than the black intermediate.
The work very well don't get me wrong but if you have a Humvee you aren't to worried about size and weight.
