    My first DIY Tarp...

Well, this took 3 evenings to finish, and we still have to install the panel pulls, but it is turning out ok. The cat-cuts were a pain to sew, and the stitches are not the straightest, but it pitches tight and doesn't leak.

Silnylon is kind of a pain to work with, but if I did it, then you can too.

This was a project that my friend Jason and I did together and learned a lot. We are gonna try to do a couple more winter tarps when we have the time, and I am sure that we can get better every time.

I had a lot of photos of the process and the finished tarp, but my phone got corrupted and this is all I have for now. I will take some photos of the tie outs and the tarp hanging tomorrow.

DIY is fun and you can do it if you try.

It has 4 1/2 inch cat cuts and the tie outs were reinforced with grosgrain instead of pack cloth. I kind of modeled it after a edge with a few changes.

    11 ft ridgeline
    122 wide
    weight??

3/4 grosgrain ridgeline and tie out re-enforcements
    3/4 beastie dees
    Keyrings for the ridgeline loops

    More photos later...

Looks great so far, can't wait to see it strung up. I"m really getting the itch to do a tarp project. What advice can you pass on that really helped you out, or what would you do differently next time?

Looks great. Where did you decide to get the silnylon from?

Good job, hairpins to hold in place that's a good idea.

    Tarp photos.

I still have to add panel pulls, but here is the almost finished tarp. It stayed up all night last night with a about half an inch of rain and 15 mph winds. The ridgeline looks like it will not have to be seam sealed. (hooray!)

weight: 13.9 oz with amsteel 1.7 30ft suspension, mason line tie outs and stuff sack.

    Sorry for the poor photos.

I may give it an overnight test the day after Thanksgiving.

I got the silnylon from Noah Lamport

My main advice would be: Study and find what tarp size suits you. Make a scale drawing, and make sure you like it, or just go with a known set of plans like the black kat or the DIYGearsupply plans.

Making the cat cuts with a PVC "bow" helps you tweak them just the way you want them. I also made a template from paneling, since we had some lying around the barn.

After that: JUST TAKE YOUR TIME and if you mess up fix it and try again. It may take longer, but you will feel better in the end.

Also, joining the 2 sides with grosgrain was the easiest part and at least for me, easier than a flat felled/french seam. I recommend that. Ironing the grosgrain helps a lot. We pinned everything with hair pins.

The warbonnet style tie outs seem to be doing well with 3/4 grosgrain.

I like it! Little does he know, but this tarp is going to my friend Jason, who just thought he was helping me make it. and also....little does he know, that this makes him in debt to me to help on my next tarps. (evil laugh!!mwahahahah!!)

I learned all this stuff from hammockforums, so thanks to everybody's ideas that I stole, borrowed, etc. You rock!

Looks great! I made one recently with Noah Lamport sil as well. DIY is way too much fun and very addicting! What is your opinion of the grosgrain ridgeline? That is the same way I did mine and i love the simplicity of it....and no seam sealing!

Well, I have only made a tarp this way, but we practiced with a flat felled french hybrid on some scrap and as far as my skill level, I could make it look better this way, plus it gives it strength and no seam sealing. I also feel better about pulling it really taught. I think I will do my next winter tarp like this too.

I may add buckles instead of rings at the ridgleine on the next tarp, and use grosgrain for the suspension. I finally found some buckles that will grab into grosgrain! I would like to see how it holds up to some wind and abuse though.

Without ever having used it, I suggest you try polyester grosgrain for the suspension instead of the usual nylon grosgrain. My thinking is it may have less stretch.
