Actually, I am a cheesehead, born & raised in Milwaukee. When I worked at 3M back in the 70's we called ourselves "Badpher's", half Badger, half Gopher. That of course begs the question what we are "bad 'fer", but that's a whole other question

A hammock rig is inherently in more danger to this kind of thing, since being among trees is pretty much integral to the whole setup.

Tents are usually set up in clearings or even completely out of danger in fields.
I agree -- I was the only one in our party of 7 that was in the trees. That said, the falling tree did tear a hole in the tarp of one of the ground campers. This tree was big enough, and right on the edge of the clearing, so anyone set up at the edge of the clearing was in danger.

I've witnessed a tree spontaneously falling twice. It is indeed somewhat creepy. I'm glay you're okay

I would start by looking at some of the later disassembly posts in this thread, and of course there is some relevant info in HC4U's DIY HH thread.

Kurt, you should have called my cell! Even though I couldn't get there early enough to hike with you on Saturday and had the wife and dog with me, I was in the neighborhood (only minutes away) and had TWO hammocks with me - my new BB and a Clark NA. I would have GLADLY lent you either for your trip, had I known of the issue! You didn't happen to invite the reporter back for the June trip, did you? I may have to be on my best behavior.

Guess you guys got me. Where I camp you can't really get away from the trees most of the time, so I end up sleeping under them.

That's pretty much the case around here too. I was just being nit-picky with you.

Let's face it though. There's inherent danger in any kind of outdoor activity. That shouldn't stop anybody from getting out, it should just motivate people to be knowledgeable about the dangers so that they can avoid them, and be prepared to deal with them.

Refer to my location. Compare inherent danger of big city to the threat of a tree falling on me. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I think I'll take the dangers of the outdoors any day of the week.
