This is quite awesome. I did see one little nitpick edit you might want to consider: I think you have the names of the Midshipman's Knot and the Rolling Hitch backwards on Fig 12 page 15. I think the knot 1 is the rolling hitch and 2 is the Midshipman's (or Taunt-line) hitch.

Other than that awesome and I'll be adding this to my collection of ebooks and references for knots.

Thanks to dickstarbuck, bird101, kc8ljm, Alifetrip and lindrome for posting.

    lindrome:

Re the Midshipman's hitch vs Rolling hitch.

I have found that Ashley’s comments generate some confusion, not least in myself, and have tried to simplify them a bit.

My head starts to hurt after my third reading on what he has to say on numbers # 1728, 1729, 1730, 1734 and 1735.
Reading the interpretations of his explanations in other Knot Books, does little to help.

I have called Midshipman’s Hitch when the second turn lies over the shoulder of the first – whether it is tied to a spar, another rope or to itself.
Similarly, I have called Rolling Hitch when the second turn follows the first, no matter what it is tied to.

If this seems an oversimplification, that is because it is – yet the reader does go away with a clear idea of which is which, and able to tie whichever of the two hitches seems appropriate in a given situation.

Ashley himself seems to follow this interpretation in 1855 and 1856.

    Hope this explains my choice.

Indeed. Didn't mean to question your choice, I only was remarking that it seemed different than I've seen before. You have done a lot more research on the matter than I.

    Thanks for you effort.

DIY from someone on here. I don't really know much about what I bought, but I'm sure it's real nice. I'm gonna look, dissect and learn from this one.

This is great! I've only bought Ashley's BOKs to give as a gift - so it's especially nice to see lots of reference to that wonderful book.

Very nice and clear illustrations and explanations.

    Thanks for sharing

My compliments! I own a lot of knot books, and I like the way you work variants into each knot's description (e.g., the bowline). Good pictures, too!
