I'm in the very early planning stage for an AT thru hike attempt in 2015 (SOBO) or 2016 (NOBO), so thanks to those who've posted some very good info/insight in this thread!

In 40 degree weather I generally just wear a base layer and some fleece no top quilt...
As far as having a quality product that goes beyond rating...hammock Gear rocks! They sent me a 0 degree TQ and I had it out in feels like -10 with high winds and kept me well above 70 for warmth.
When originally thinking about the dates to hike the AT I wanted to take gear that would he kept the whole trip, minimizing dealing with shipping or receiving any items. So that may something to consider as you go through this. A slightly more versatile top quilt range (maybe a 40) would work better if you carried an extra layer which would give you more adaptability... Of course it depends on what your level of comfort with all sorts of things is.
The syntactical nature of reality, the real secret of magic, is that the world is made of words. And if you know the words that the world is made of, you can make of it whatever you wish.
