9F hollycow thats cold for central Texas. Congrats on your single digit hang.
Thanks! We're up toward the Panhandle but in the Permian Basin so this is unusually cold. When I lived close to Amarillo on the plains, though, I once went pheasant hunting at 10 below ... for about 20 minutes! LOL

This is why I used cotton: http://www.mollymacpack.com/canvaswhy.html

I wondered about the buildup of moisture, too, so the first thing I did this morning was to touch the cloth closest to my head to see if it was wet. Dry as a bone. I really like this little tent-sock for extreme cold.

Settled in and read a while before checking the thermometer again.

It said 24 degrees! Is that possible?

Not sure that I believe that.

There was no wind of which to speak, calm by West Texas standards.

Woke up at 6 with cold toes but otherwise slept well.

Now you see the true meaning of "micro-climate".

It's not a large area climate that you would have behind walls and a roof. It's anywhere the climate can be changed from the greater area.

As you found out, the tarp, sock, bugnet, hammock... helps to "create" that "micro-climate", small area in the backyard, woods, etc. Even a small box, under plastic, between bushes, etc can help.

Glad your having fun in the cold. We would love some over here.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

    Ayup, seeing is believing!

Think that I could like winter camping -- the frosty air and quiet.

Going to REI in San Antonio tomorrow (down here in South Texas for some training). I'll pick up a 12' Noah's Tarp.

I put a wool blanket down for a footfall the other night. That allowed me to crawl around to stake the tent-sock down tight and was nice to stand on in the morning. If one had a 2.5x4' piece of wool felt ...

    Cold weather flooring-
Try a CCF pad for winter time. I learned it from TZBrown. But when the snows on the ground, a 1/2" thick ccf pad (2 x 4 foot?) is a dream to stand on.
In stocking feet your tootsies can stay dry and warm.

    Go for it.

Yes, this 12' Noah's Tarp will be very nice. Can't wait to get home with it and will probably have some Dutchware waiting for it.

Ha! In the top of my mom's closet I found a Faribault 100% wool stadium blanket, brown and gold plaid, the perfect size for my tent-sock, 4x4 feet.

With my new 12' Noah's Tarp ... "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow."
